I think it's human nature to feel set upon.

There's a famous study that illustrates this to an extent.  People were
asked to hit each other - but only as hard as the previous person hit them.
Universally people hit others harder than they were hit in the first place.

Lately there's been a lot of attacks on atheism and I'll happily admit that
I've probably struck back harder than was necessary.  This may also have to
do with my moving from a very open, generally humanist community to a rather
closed, religious community.

I make no apologies for defending my position, when it's questioned, as
vigorously or as passionately as I can.  I do however, sincerely, apologize
if I've been seen to attack religion (or religious people) without prior
cause.
