My second cousin Mac is moderately retarded. He lives on his own, holds down a full-time job (night manager at a hotel laundry, where he does the same thing every day), and generally takes care of himself (with some outside nursing help, as I understand it). He's in his late 50's, his father is dead, and his mother is elderly.
I know his parents set up his retirement/medical fund years ago, and arranged for his nursing assistance to continue. They also have him in their will as a trustee, etc. Of course, all of this depends on severity and type of retardation.
