For what it's worth Paint Shop Pro is now a Corel Product and the latest
version is much more consistent.

They have positioned it has a consumer tool (with CorelDraw/CorelPhoto-Paint
as the professional tools) and have kind of "fluffed it up" with a lot of
photo tools and wizards. In fact the new name is "Paint Shop Pro Photo".

Some of them are actually really good - like the "red eye tool" but others
are "one step" tools which, while great for the consumer, might be a little
canned for a pro. It also does image organization and "album-ing".

Still - the package is pretty damned full featured. Full support for
PhotoShop files (including layers and transparency), most color-models,
support PhotoShop Plug-ins and really, truly excellent masking tools (even
supporting feathering and anti-aliased knock-outs) and tons more.

For 90% of people I think it's more than anybody would ever need.

Of course with all that the cost has gone up - it's $90 for the full version
now.

I used to keep Paint Shop Pro around as a quick and dirty editor and
viewer... I still keep it up to date (it does a few things better than
anything else) but quick and dirty it isn't any more. It's a large, full
featured program with some pretty hefty system requirements. Not nearly has
hefty as CorelDraw or PhotoShop but still, small it ain't.

I second this. I don't have a current version but ACDSee was always a
quality app with some real brain behind it.

In the same vein also look for older versions of products that can nab you
big savings on upgrades. For example the CorelDraw X3 suite is $399 full
but only $159 to upgrade. PhotoShop is $650 full but only a $199 upgrade.
Find any old version and upgrade on the cheap.

Also check out alternative retailers - Amazon sells the full version of
CorelDraw X3 for $209, nearly %50 off. Finally student discounts can be
HUGE... it may be worth it to find a college kid to buy your software for
you. ;^)
