Actual VR really hasn't come very far. I worked with the original
"CyberPods" long ago in Boston - four short games ("Dactyl Nightmare" and
"Hero" are the only two I could remember). Here's a picture of my lovely
bride (then lovely girlfriend) playing it. The pic (damn I'm old) is from
1995:

The unit featured a very large headpiece (these have definitely gotten
smaller) and ran on an Amiga 3000. View was controlled via head-tracking
and movement with a thumbstick. Graphics have gotten better but the basic
technology is still pretty much the same: head tracking, some gross, totally
abstracted movement scheme and uncomfortable gear.

And in the end even this really primitive stuff just hasn't been really
popularized yet.

I'm looking forward to what the PS3 does with the Eye (head tracking is well
within its capabilities). But I'm not holding my breath... VR is a classic
example of something where it's really pretty easy to get to a certain level
and then really (REALLY) hard to get further.
