In the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence a religious reference is made, specifically to God and the Creator, tying the two together in the eyes of the author and those who accepted the document. To add to that the text in the second paragraph specifically states that the government is formed to protect those rights, "endowed by their Creator."
