I disagree. I've been programming since dirt was young, and I still
program as hobby, currently spending a lot of time programming music
and digital editing programs like ProTools and Maya. I'm also working
with Ruby on Rails and a lot of the newer programming tools.

Those of my generation who were not hobby programmers and did not
stay current are now mostly unemployed, or at least severely
under-employed. On the other hand, I have more work than I can do,
and a salary with 6 figures to the left of decimal point and the first
number isn't a one.

I hire a lot of programmers. I found the article to be very accurate
in predicting who will do well. The only problem I have with hiring
great programmers is getting them to follow the standards and not go
off the farm with their own ideas of how to do the work.

Some the worst programmers I've encountered had the "engineering
mindset" and a constant desire to reinvent the wheel. Spare me.
