The whole reason we have SS is because letting people to their own devices didn't work and with the current savings rate being negative, I'd say we need SS more than ever now. Don't get me wrong, I'd favor a system where those that make the case they can save responsibly (me) get their money back. And I don't favor SS from primarily a humanitarian perspective - keeping old debtors off the steets - I favor it because without it we'd have to pay to clean up those street people and that's way more expensive than getting my SS money back when I retire. So think of SS that way: you can get your payroll taxes back when you retire, or you can get nothing and have your taxes raised 20%. Plus you don't pay payroll taxes on anything over $97k. The bottom line is that it's just not that much money compared to what you need to retire middle class.
