Live Messenger does a good job - although we go a bit simpler. It lets you
just "Broadcast" your webcam ("Show your webcam" in the application) -
people on your contact list can just watch it.
Grandma only has to click on button to see things rather than worry about
her camera and mic and everything. We then just call normally using the
speaker phone. So grandma sees Christmas morning and birthday parties but
doesn't have to fuss with her set-up.
The program also does traditional video chat well enough - just one-to-one
but that's all we've ever wanted.
There's a lot of extras as well. The program makes connected with remote
assistance (where you can see and control grandma's desktop) easy. There's
also a ton of casual games to play while chatting (my son and mother play
together sometimes).
You also get "sharing spaces" in the new one - basically offline file
sharing. You dump something in a special folder and it'll be in grandma's
folder when she logs in.
As for cameras I'm in market myself but haven't come to any conclusions.
I'm leaning towards Logitech (I've always liked their stuff) but they have
something 200,340 models to choose from. ;^)
