It's always easy to pick this stuff apart.

No Scotty Moore. That's just a crime.

Chet Atkins should be in the top 10. He's unbelievably low on the list. Les
Paul, possibly top 10, certainly top 20. We're talking men who's influence
was absolutely profound and who's style epitomized passion and precision.

But probably the biggest crime of all, absolutely beyond comprehension --
where's Django Reinhardt? That is just gauling. You absoutely can't do a
credible list and not put Django in the top 10, so it's just totally insane
to leave him off altogether. I see Eddie Lang, which is appropriate, but no
Django, who took Lang's style and transformed it into another plain of
reality. That's like listing the 100 greatest playwrites and leaving off
Shakespeare.

As for Stevie Vai -- I was commenting to a friend this evening about my lack
of guitar talent, even though I love music and love playing. The talent
just isn't there. But, in all modesty, I have great taste in music. I said
"God just didn't want me to have talent. He gives all the talent to a guy
like Steve Vai, who has no taste. Why couldn't God have given me his talent
instead?" Vai is all technique and no soul.

I can't argue with Jimi being number one, or with B.B., Page or Van Halen
being in the top 6 (mainly because of EVH's influence, not that he's the
most soulful (i.e. complete) guitarist I've ever heard). I think Beck tends
to be highly overrated, especially by rock guitarists. Chuck Berry and
Clapton are also deserving of high honors. Robert Johnson should be in the
top 10. I love SRV and would keep him about where he is. Pete Townsend and
Keith Richards are two of the greatest riffers ever and deserve their high
placement.

Charlie Christian is hugely important (and Peter Green is on the list, btw).
The remaining part of the top 25, the only ones I would include that high up
are Harrison, Guy, Young and Cropper.

Speaking of great guitarists, tomorrow Johnny A. is coming to town. I'm a
huge fan. He's my favorite guitarist right now. He's opening for George
Thorogood. I'm supposed to call JA tomorrow afternoon -- if he gets into
town in time, I'll be taking him to dinner. I'm quite thrilled. I probably
won't be able to sleep tonight. You can here samples of JA at
