The point is that what the US uses two very different definitions of
subsidies. If you include the total cost then Canadian companies pay about
the same, if not more, given the distance to market. Also the WTO and the
NAFTA trade tribunals have examined the issue previously and both bodies
reported that there is effectively no subsidy on Canadian lumber. Its just
whiny US companies that cannot compete, and US Senators listening to their
contributors. Look at the amount of money that the US lumber companies and
associations give to politicians in the border states, and look at which
Senators, and Congress critters are crying loudest for the tariff on
Canadian lumber.
