I was in the same shoes, except it was for me. I chose the one below..
It's fairly cheap so if he doesn't enjoy it but not cheaply built.
It's a AstroMaster 114 EQ. It's got a 114mm mirror (4.5"). The moon is
awesome through it. You can't really see Mars, but Saturn is an
amazing. I can't wait until Jupiter comes back around (I'm not getting
up at 4:30 to see it)..

Things to consider.. the finder scope SUCKS.. buy a better one. I
couldn't get it to work at all. I read the reviews so I already had
one but I wanted to see if maybe it was just theirs.
Also, it comes with a 20mm lens and a 10mm one, those are nice but if
he likes it.. get a lens set from Amazon (~$99). I bought this too and
really like the quality lens and filters. I did my research and this
is a great telescope.
