If the DD-WRT thing doesn't work for you, there is an alternative. You can buy a firewall appliance box from Soekris Engineering (www.soekris.com), and install either pfSense (www.pfsense.org) or m0m0wall (m0n0.ch) on it. The Soekris net4801 is reaching end-of-life status, but it is perfectly good for your needs. I've been using one for 3 years - it's rock solid. It costs $231 for the board and case and comes with three NICs, no drive. Buy a CF to IDE adapter for $10, burn pfsense or m0n0wall to a CF card, and you are done. Both pfsense and m0n0wall support IPSEC VPN. pfSense has a lot more features, including plugins, but is more complicated overall to deal with.
The big advantage of going this route over the Linksys firmware upgrade route is that you have three NICs and can make a DMZ if you want to serve stuff from your location out to the public Internet.
