I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said after the first paragraph,
but I take exception with the first paragraph.

Think al Qaeda.

For the rest of it, to add some perspective that will both reinforce what
you're saying and perhaps add some depth, I would recommend the new HBO
series John Adams.  I know it's Hollywood, and it's stylized, but it does
communicate the emotions of the times and the impetus for independence.
