Chances are you would lose them anyhow. Moreover they are still available for 
the individual ready reserve. It they get called back after attending 
university or college then the army wins - better educated soldiers are better 
soldiers, that's what all the research since the Stoffler study from WW2  has 
shown.

Besides something like an enhanced GI Bill would result in more soldiers 
staying in to qualify, and more importantly more would be likely to stay on 
well beyond any obligation.
