I have to disagree with this as well.

I'll give an example.  When "Who wants to be a millionaire" came out, it was
a phenomenon.  Most competitors quickly made a spin off in order to siphon
viewers and to make the show run of the mill. Well, how does this relate to
the news?  Fox News.  Fox News wins the ratings battle over the other news
networks by a lot every night.  Obviously, there is something there that the
"people" want,  yet no other news network has made any attempt to make their
shows more "fair and balanced" in order to siphon off viewers and make their
format more run of the mill.   If it were about what people wanted, they
would have done so.
