Last I heard he was still in hiding for his life but he's a poor example as he did a bit more than renounce Islam.
I can point to almost daily articles about how apostates are deprived of their rights (like their children, freedom, etc.) in 'moderate' Muslim countries and even in those countries stories come up of the killing of apostates.
