Well.. in California.. get one every now and then with a 4.0 or 5.0 in the LA region. Probably about 5 years year since the last good size one.
5.0s do some damage to the area at the center of the quake. Here, 10 miles out, I had a pen fall off the shelf. If you see some of the 1s with Yorba Linda before the 5.8... foreshocks.
