Correct. It almost happened during WWII, and that was when the Arabs were still willing to sell us oil, albeit only accepted payment up-front using the gold standard. Everyone, here's a fun-time happy exercise you can do at home: Get out a map and draw a circle over every nation that produces oil. Now draw an "X" through the circles for countries who hate us, or who would hate us if the people overthrew their monarchical governments (like Saudi Arabia). Now write the annual production in barrels in those circles for countries who really like us. Now add up all the numbers and divide by four (or even six) and compare this number to the annual consumption in the United States. Now consider how strategically important the countries with the empty circles are.
