Not sure if you still have a copy of the initial lease contract from 6 years
ago, but if you do, I'd definitely look at it.  As others have suggested,
there may be other local laws that apply, but there may also be something in
the contract about how month-to-month is handled.  My current lease says
*either party* can give 60 days written notice.  This would mean I have to
give 60 day notice if I move out, but it also means they have to give me 60
days if they decided to terminate my lease (for a condo conversion for
example).  Even after the lease moves to month-to-month this lease remains
in effect.

You may have something similar in your lease.  I'd check it out.  Could buy
you an extra month to decide about moving.
