That goes right to the core of the issue for me. My mother raised my brother and I by herself for six years from the time I was 2 years old to 8 years old. She made a lot of sacrifices, and I admire her for doing all the things she did to be a mother and a provider for us. Even though I disagree with Dana on a lot of political issues, I admire and respect her for having the strength to raise her kids on her own, because I have been there myself and seen what it takes to keep a family together. The larger point is that a mother or a father can be a good parent and a good provider. A woman doesn't have a to choose just one thing.
I asked my mother recently about the feminist reaction to the Palin pick. A little background: my mother was once part of the women's power movement, she taught and worked at Goucher College, among other things. She remarked that the women's movement was all about empowering women to have choices in their lives, but the leaders of the feminist movement didn't want women to choose traditional roles, or have more than two kids, or otherwise deviate from the paths they were advocating. To her, the feminists were just as bad as the men who had come before them- trying to dictate what women should do with their lives. Palin makes traditional feminists very uneasy because it demonstrates that, in today's society, a woman can be successful on the merits without having to follow the paleo-feminist script. For those of us who actually have real life experience with women in positions of authority, gender is not an issue. Sarah Palin has a husband, a pile of kids, and she runs the state of Alaska. I think that's pretty cool. > On Wed, Sep 3, 2008 at 2:18 PM, Casey wrote: > > Oh and lets not forget all the single mom's out there. I could just see the > headlines now. I don't think so kids. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~| Adobe® ColdFusion® 8 software 8 is the most important and dramatic release to date Get the Free Trial http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;203748912;27390454;j Archive: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/message.cfm/messageid:267789 Subscription: http://www.houseoffusion.com/groups/CF-Community/subscribe.cfm Unsubscribe: http://www.houseoffusion.com/cf_lists/unsubscribe.cfm?user=11502.10531.5
