Don't know -- a lot of street people. News stories I saw said there
were buses but not many people took them.
In the city itself you would not need a car and it might even be a
problem for you in terms of parking. The eastern end of the island has
a lot of dunes, open space, and recently built summer homes on stilts,
probably where most of this video was shot, from the look of it. Even
those were only 6 to 8 feet high as I recall though. The western part
of the island is a rehabber's dream, victorian houses split up into
small apartments and some really really nice gentrified neighborhoods
in places. Around the edges of that there are probably a lot of poor
people in the non-gentrified parts of town. A flavor a bit like New
Orleans; they even have a Mardi Gras. Someone said somethign to me
when I was down there about people coming south for the winter and not
having the funds to leave.
In terms of transportation, once you get off the island though -- not
sure if there is a pedestrian access on the causeway to the mainland,
and the other side really doesn't have much of anything for about 40
miles until you get to Houston. And that whole area is also at risk
because it is along the port of Houston.
