The Wal-mart Effects spends a lot of time talking about this. If I remember correctly, the pattern starts with local small business hanging on for a while before they go out of business. At the same time, feeder businesses end up opening in the same shopping center or near the Wal-mart. The net economic effects ends up being even. However, downtown areas of small towns are basically deserted. This cycle tends to repeat.
