Non-proliferation largely covers actions by nuclear powers in an attempt to
not create more nuclear powers and to keep in check the growth of stockpiles
within nuclear powers. Both of those things seem like admirable goals to me
and something we should encourage in India.

As to why we should be concerned about the deal, it's because India and
Pakistan have gone to war with each other quite frequently since they became
independent countries. I suppose it could be argued that it might benefit us
to have India wipe out Pakistan in a nuclear war, but that's not something I
personally want to encourage. Pakistan is unstable enough as it is right
now, I don't think we want to encourage a mentality that they had best
strike now before India gets more powerful through US backing.
