I had a similar prob with a friends PC

they complained it was getting more and more unstable - and looking at the
machine the SW config was a mess - so I backed up all the data and formatted
the HD ready to install a new OS.

I had to take the case of to change a net card - and doing so I noticed the
cpu fan was not even moving - goodness know how long for...

Fortuneately, being as the system was only and AMD K62 350, nonpermanent
damage has been done... and the system did need formatting anyway...
