The last time I went hiking was in England and I needed the space for overpriced diet cokes, lucozade light (why can't you buy that here?!), and food. These were day hikes. I also had to worry about nettles and mud. Even if I had had instruments or laptops I certainly wouldn't have thought to cart them around.
