I can easily forgive your ignorance, because I share it :) I have no idea how that whole process played out, but I distinctly remember the newscasts reporting that should Carnahan win the election, his wife would step in his place. Dunno who or how or why that was decided...my GUESS is that some group representing the Missouri Democratic Party probably was allowed to select the successor. In any event, the voters knew before they cast their ballots that they were voting for his wife.
