I felt the same way about UAC at first so I turned it off when I first got my laptop with Vista. I've never had a virus in all the years I've used a computer. And with my vista machine I had up to date A/V and a firewall. Two days after I turned off UAC and a week after I got the machine I had a virus. I don't use pirated software and I don't surf porn so I really don't know what happened. After one of the HJT forums helped my remove the virus I put it UAC back on. Once you get used to UAC it's really not that bad. I originally figured that vista without UAC must be the same as XP, but it almost seems more vulnerable than XP when UAC is off. Just my $.02

I turn on the firewall outside the office, and I definitely have anti-virus software installed. As for UAC, we all got along without it prior to Vista, so that makes me a little skeptical of putting up with its many intrusions, although it certainly does make things safer. I'd switch my laptop to Ubuntu, but there are still a handful of things I need Windows for at the moment. If I knew it would work, I would switch to Ubuntu and run Vista in a virtual machine, but I am not confident that the bits and pieces of the Tablet PC work in a VM, at least not yet.
