In October. But still maintained an overall area less at all times
than the 79 to 2000 average and the only average it beat out is last
years. Oh, and that average fell below last years this month. Oh, and
its all new ice, which melts much faster than ice that has been there
more than 2 years, so will probably vanish even quicker next summer.
Ooops.

It is a cooler year and there is more ice this year. But the depletion
of stable ice, ice that has been there for years, has accelerated
significantly. It is not a single month, or single year, process. The
ice pack will grow and shrink depending on local weather phenomena and
longer trends like el nino/la nina. But the overall trend is steadily
and significantly downward. And most importantly, the areas that serve
as anchors, the places that have years, decades of ice built up, those
are the places that are truly being impacted. Some amount of ice is
going to melt and freeze any particular year, that is a given. But
what we are seeing is a steady deterioration of the long term ice pack
in the arctic. That is what really worries climatologists.
