Mandriva and Debian (which is what Ubuntu is built off of anyway) are solid as well. Ubuntu is popular enough now that even it has distributions built around it. I particularly like Linux Mint.
Seriously, these days with gnome and kde, if you can operate windows, you can use a linux based computer with no problems, as long as you don't try to do anything under the hood, as it were. I found getting used to some of the weirdness in vista more confusing than anything I ran across in day to day use with Ubuntu.
