I've tried Linux on the desktop several times in the last ten years, starting with Red Hat, moving to Fedora, Corel Linux, etc. etc. etc.
Ubuntu just plain works, especially if you buy it pre-installed on hardware that is checked out against it. Dell is pre-installing Ubuntu, which tells me that the OS has turned the corner- finally.
