Gotta agree with the hats off here. I did basic EMT back when I was a teenager and basic EMT was easier. In those days it was called EMT-1 and was a first responder/wilderness rescue with some additional medical. I worked as a lifeguard/medical staff for a boy scout camp, had to do 6 backboard rescues that summer for possible spinal injury. Fortunately none of them were bad injuries. The worst of those was a kid who was rather overweight and didn't fit the straps we had. I had pointed out the deficiency in the set to the head of the camp but it wasn't a priority, I mean who would need an XL set of straps at a boy scout camp? Most everyone is 12 years old. So we had to pull out a set of seat belts from a truck and use that to immobilize the kid for the 7 mile trip down the mountain on a gravel road.
Ugliest injury I ever had to deal with was a kid that was running down the trail and fell on a downed log. Impaled his calf on a broken off branch, through the entire calf. That was bloody and nasty. No easy wound to clean there. I'm sure that shrapnel wounds make it pale in comparison but that was the nastiest for me. Still not sure how that kid go that much force down sideways but he did. Made the kid who sliced his palm open with a knife cutting leather seem like a clean wound. Judah On Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 9:19 PM, Bruce Sorge <[email protected]> wrote: > My hats off to you Scott.
