thanks for the info...i have a very large house (3000 sq. ft) and
just ferret proofing it would be a chore in itself...maybe this
is not the time to venture into the ferret realm....
with me working 2 jobs and the kids in school all day...i worry
that a ferret would get lonely, even bored without being able to
get out and about and explore...
but....with proper planning, this may be a nice pet for him....i
will have to read the links you advise on..
thanks again for your info
:)

Stephanie,

I forgot to add that yes probably get two. We started off with
one, Ryoga,
and it became clear that he was bored and lonely. so we got
another ferret
and things changed immensely. Two ferrets really are not much
more both than
one, and about 5 times as entertaining. They are also twice as
likely to get
into trouble. Then they discover the adventures of getting into
trouble
together. That adds a whole new dimension to the matter. They
also keep them
selves entertained and occupied, much easier than a solitary
ferret.

I'll have to get back to you about monthly costs, I figure about
a 5 pound
(about $20 or so) of ferret food like Totally Ferret, every six
weeks. Then
you need litter - they're productive little tube-rats. We use
compressed
sawdust pellets. Its very cheap.

If you looking at getting a ferret, you're going to need a cage -
around
$100 to $200. Then there's vet costs for an annual exam and
vaccinations -
about $70 depending on the vet. You'll need to find a vet that
specializes
in ferrets or are very familiar with them.

Problems. The biggest health problem with ferrets is adrenal
cancer. Chances
are at some point in its life it may come down with that. Our
oldest one has
gone through surgery for it twice in the last few years. That
costs $700 and
up depending.

As for de-scenting and neutering, most ferrets are sold like that
now. It
definitely cuts down on the smell, as does bathing them
regularly.

hth,

larry
