I don't know if they'd be worse... but I'm not sure they'd much better. The main issue is what you mean by "power"... if an extreme evangelical were to gain, say, the presidency (i.e. still bound by the Constitution) then I doubt much would change. But if they truly "gained power" I think it could really bad, really quick. The constitution would, of course, change from a completely secular document to a religiously motivated one. No gay marriage (homosexual sex would almost definitely be made illegal), no reproductive freedom (it's very likely that all forms of birth control, not just abortion, would be outlawed), woman's rights would be set back (the Bible is fairly clear on its opinion of women). Education would suffer tremendously (the resulting lack of ability to compete in the global market would eventually take its toll on our quality of life). I would fully expect America to officially become a "Christian Nation"... Baptists and Lutherans might be tolerated but Muslims, Jews, Catholics and most others would be severely limited. Power corrupts in the best of cases... but when that power is believed to be granted directly by an infallible almighty God? Brothera and sisters, fasten your seatbelt.
