Mexico has a very socialist political culture and a strong anti-military bent. I count that as two strikes against them joining the US. And yes, I think about it seriously.
It makes more sense to bring Canada into the fold. Maybe Quebec stays independent if they like and the western provinces become US states. Taking Maureen's "no borders" approach, that would actually work rather well in a lot of respects, but would Americans and Canadians buy into it? No idea.
