My first problem, which appears to be insurmountable: my Creative X-Fi Music card doesn't work.
Apparently this is a hardware conflict between the Card, my NForce motherboard, and the drivers which has existed for years. The audio comes through crackly and screechy so as to be unrecognisable, and this is with all the different drivers I tried. It also causes a slowdown in multimedia playback.
