I'm sure they would do exactly that. My point though is that the economics are a bit different between marijuana and tobacco. I believe that there are plenty of people that would happily buy a pack of Camel Indica Lights or something. Convenience and availability do count for something.
But marijuana is much easier for joe sixpack (six nugget?) to grow on his own. Toss a couple seeds in the back yard, buy a fairly inexpensive hydroponic setup, all sorts of options and it is not overly difficult to produce your own. That is because of both the characteristics of the plant itself and also the fact that marijuana requires very minimal post-harvest processing. It just has to be dried. A lot of the value-added proposition in the tobacco industry is found post-harvesting. They don't sell a lot of straight tobacco and most tobacco is further processed with a variety of ingredients to produce characteristic flavors. I'm sure that marijuana would be an attractive alternate market for tobacco companies. In fact, I've heard that they have developed business plans in case legalization should come about. But the economics of the market just aren't the same. I'm sure that if it was, RJ Reynolds (or whatever it is called now) would be pushing Congress to legalize marijuana. And what you are seeing now is the growth of non-commercial marijuana production for medical use. And the more that happens, the harder it will be for big business to switch the market over should we come about to legalizing on a national basis. Judah On Tue, Feb 3, 2009 at 12:48 PM, C.
