I think Judah, as usual, stated the cynical political motivated reason
for the "messiah" talk.

But clear away that silly debris and there is an interesting
sociological question there.

My 2-second, 2-bit thought is that Obama was a nexus of multiple things:

1- Great speaker. Bush isn't one.

2- Soaring hope speaker. We really don't have one and haven't for at
least a decade, but probably more.

3 - Black presidential candidate. Have never had a reasonably
possible one of those and that possibility touches more than black
people.

4 - Charming young guy with young family. This brings a sense of renewal.

5 - Not Bush or Bush-like.

6 - Not a baby-boomer or wearing the Vietnam ball & chain.

7 - tech savvy

8 - legal scholar, and constitutional scholar, and overall genius

9 - has spent his professional career serving his country through his
community rather than through business or the military

10 - International background, broken family, married a ghetto girl

So I think there's a lot for people to identify/like with in him and
that's a large driver of his popularity.
