1) I agree with Kevin that there is a tendency in this society to blame
others for our failings.

2) Every person has a right to seek his day in court.

I don't begrudge the parents the opportunity to prove in a court of law that
a drug led their boy to commit this terrible act. It may have and unless
there is ample evidence that the parents are reaching, they should pursue
their rights.

I have no opinion about the merits of the case at this time, so I can only
speak in theory. But I am reminded of the all the cries for tort reform
after MacDonald's had to pay a large settlement to a woman who burned
herself with coffee. People love to point to this case and say, "See, people
are sue happy and the courts unjustly reward them." But the facts of the
case prove an opposite conclusion -- consumers need to retain the right to
bring suits against companies that callously produce dangerous products.

Sure there are frivolous suits filed and there is a tendency not to accept
personal responsibility, but until the facts are out, which can best be
handled in a court of law, we can't really know whether a suit is frivolous
or not. Thank God we have a court system that allows consumers to carry
forward their grievances against large corporations, and even some times
win.
