When I came back to Cal in 1972, there were some co-ed dorms - but that was
co-ed floors, not co-ed (co-hab) rooms. A couple of guys I talked to who
thought it would be "kids in a candy store" found to their surprise it was
like being at home and having sisters. Some who had no sisters found it a
positive learning experience. I'm not sure how they handled the one big
communal bathroom per floor - think that's why living on a co-ed floor was
strictly voluntary.

Yeah, the frat houses were something else then too. But the dorms were
operated by the university itself.
