>We're told to do a LOT of things in the new testament. I'm weary of people

I certainly don't take everything in it literally, but neither do I just throw
out parts because I don't like what they tell me to do.

>Incidentally, have you read the book "A year of living biblically"??

Not sure I have...I think it's on my reading list, but haven't gotten to it
yet.

>Yes, but everyone else doesn't really want to hear about it.

Which is fine...if it bothers someone, I am respectful of that...as I said
elsewhere, they just aren't someone I would then associate with for any length
of time, outside of a business relationship.

>I don't try to convince people to vote my political party....so yes, it is
>similar to that.

I guess a lot of it has to do with what kinds of friends and family you keep.
We argue politics ALL the time in my family (among other things) and we sure as
heck don't agree...and certainly a lot of my family thinks I'm bonkers for
being Democrat. We have some people in my family that are very strictly
religious (more than me, really) and others that aren't at all, but no one
would even think of telling someone else that anything they would want to say
or talk about is unwelcome (short of personal insult of course).

>Indeed. Same is probably true with religion. Religion, like politics, is a
>discussion that usually goes like this: "Here is what I believe. Here is why

>It's that last part that complicates things.

Uh, why? That's like saying you can't talk about anything that you might
disagree about, which is certainly the sign of a pretty closed mind. Heck, I
can get into some great debates with other programmers about "best practices"
which some treat almost as religion as well, and I don't refuse to talk about
it because what I believe might be the best way to code is different than the
way someone else does. Maybe I'll learn something interesting I may not have
thought before, and maybe I'll just come away thinking they haven't got a clue.
It's still all good...it's just about mutual respect. Anyone that is "high and
mighty" about their religion and being saved is certainly not someone I
particularly like being around either. But likewise someone that is just all "I
don't believe that crap, shut up" is not someone I care to be around either.
Just as I'd never want to be around people that won't let me brag about my
wonderful, amazing dogs. ;-)
