You are wrongly assuming "profiling" is being done on basis of looks. That
is silly.

And as for the FBI, the _definitely_ add "Christian" to the top of their
list....when dealing with certain crimes. Bombings at abortion clinics,
sniping clinic doctors through their kitchen window, etc.

Profiling based on religion, or any single factor, is not useful.

The more factors you can add to the profile, the more likely you are to get
close.

And profiling is more a reactive than predictive science. It works better to
find someone who _did_ something than to find someone that is _going to do_
something. Because the actions themselves are often the most telling clues.

And it depends on the crime. Adding "Muslim" to the list of factors for an
ATM robbery, or a drunk driving charge, is not at all useful. Adding
"Muslim" to the list of factors for a suicide bombing might be.

But I don't think that Gruss is _really_ talking about profiling in a true
law enforcement way. (Correct me if I am wrong). I read more that he wants
the US to focus efforts on identification and prevention.

Just like "latch-key" kids in poor neighborhoods are profiled and targeted
with outreach and afterschool programs, the people most likely to be "at
risk" for violent extremist behavior can be reduced to a fairly small set of
the total US population. And those people should be targeted with programs
and initiatives to give them options other than the angry rhetoric they
might currently be getting
