Just so I am clear, I was defending him too, as much from my own initial reaction as anyone else's.
I still remember the day when I was 11 I shot a bird, and only winged it. and bandaged it up. I still remember the one and only time I shot a deer with a gun. I still remember the one and only time I shot a deer with a bow. And had to track it almost 3 miles before I could finally put it down. I no longer have any desire to hunt. Would love to get good shooting a shotgun at moving targets, but that is only because I recognize I lack skill (and I hate that). So the idea of looking down a gun at a dog and squeezing is not a pleasant imagining. And looking down at the dog at my feet, it makes me a little queasy. But here is not there. And I need to remind myself of that. And he isn't there _just_ because he felt like it. We sent him there. So what he does is on us, too.
