I remember when Michael Steele was running for the Maryland governorship, he
tries to play the "nice guy" card and came across as lacking any fortitude.

I doubt seriously that the reason that he's moved up in the party, is his
cajones.

It's just odd what happened to them. You basically had this coalition
of conservatives (fiscal, social, & foreign policy) that mostly talked
fiscal and foreign policy.

That started to change with Newt and then REALLY changed with Tom
Delay, Grover Cleavland, Robert Reed, and Jack Abramoff: they realized
what southern preachers had known for decades: you can make a ton a
dough off of the religious.

Essentially a major wing of the Republicans became crooks running
payola scams off of church-goers.

While they were busy running that show, the foreign policy
reactionaries moved so far right they completed the circle and became
liberals and the neo-cons were born. Of course they're actually
pro-government authoritarians as long as the government is theirs
(which is what authoritarian really is).

And to top it all off, the fiscal conservatives were totally drowned out.

So what you now have left is an extremist mess of a Republican party
that's quickly becoming a regional one (southern). Meanwhile America
is becoming more socially liberal and Regan levels of taxes and
spending seem "liberal".

The best thing the Republicans could do is create a new set of
principles and then work with Obama to accomplish them. Their message
should be lower taxes through better managed more effective
government.

They need to become the CPA party.

And, crazy as it is to say, the one guy that seems to know that is
Michael Steele.

His problem is that he doesn't have the cajones to take on Limbaugh
and the rest to make it happen.
