Actually, I'm really not that anti-secession. A regional secession
movement has long been part of the bubbling background here in the
Northwest. I'd honestly be curious to see Texas give it a try.

I wouldn't really mind seeing an 8% reduction in the US population. As
for their economy, I'd be curious to see how that went as well. Texas
receives slightly less in federal spending than they pay in federal
taxes, so the national coffers would take a hit but not a huge one.
I'm sure that there are plenty of states which wouldn't mind hosting
one of Texas' military bases. Oregon doesn't have any military bases,
I'd bet we could find room for Ft. Hood. And it certainly would change
the calculus on illegal immigration to the US. At a guess, if Texas
had to issue all of its own bonds, print its own currency and
establish trade relations (including with its previous landlord the
good ol US of A) I'd bet that their 1.245 trillion dollar economy
would be substantially smaller for some time.

I would hate to lose SXSW and Austin City Limits. Trimming down the
size of the Big 12 Conference seems like a net benefit to everyone.
Overall, I'd say go for it. Let's give them a year, anyone that wants
to move out can, anyone that wants to move in can. Give them some time
to set up a plan and get things ready and then March 2nd, 2010 they
can strike out on their own. If we are worried about having to redo
all our flags, we can just tag in Puerto Rico as the new 50th state.
