Because words are not created equally. If the use of two negative
words conveys the intended meaning more fully and richly than a single
positive then it should be preferred. Obviously that will not always
be the case, which is why double negatives are not always used. That
does not mean that they are inappropriate, however. If you can say
what you mean with one positive, then economy of words dictates that
you should choose that route. If a different structure expresses the
meaning more fully, then that structure should be chosen.
