Just for argument's sake, I have a Schwinn 3-speed simple bike, for riding around town. I had a fairly nice 10-speed, but I always seemed to drop the chain off the gears on the back at the wrong time. I'm sure it's nothing a good tune-up by someone more bike-knowledgeable than me couldn't fix, but the 3-speed never has issues like that, and is comfortable as long as I'm not trying to pedal up a mountain. I don't even know if Schwinn has something like that any more, but I'm sure someone does.
