The public option plans being proposed in the House have cost containment as a primary goal. The current system has no cost containment. Everyone recognizes that we need cost containment for any health care reform plan to work. I just don't see Baucus' nebulous idea of "co-op" systems achieving that goal. The current setup is headed toward national bankruptcy, it is true. That is why we need genuine reform now. A public option plan is the weakest and only first step down that road. There is certainly a lot more to be done beyond reforming health insurance. I'd love to see a comprehensive look at tort reform in the medical industry. Evidence-based medicine is another area that we can save a lot of money in. A huge number of PSA tests are done every year, for instance, because of out moded protocols and we now know that they result in a large number of unnecessary surgeries that end up doing more harm than good. Add in extensive use of mammograms for people with no indicative factors and you start seeing a trend of places where real savings can be realized. Lets start with health insurance reform, get universal or near universal coverage in place, let a public plan compete with private insurance and then lets tackle the rest of the list. This is just a starting point, not the end. But you have to start somewhere.
