Try not to focus so much on the crime as the circumstances. Calley was in Vietnam, a very tough war at best. A person's objectivity and frame of mind are skewed. You have no idea how many times I wanted to just open up on a bunch of Iraqi's just because they were there. Yes, as soldiers we have the moral obligation to object to orders that are morally wrong or illegal. I cannot speak to his frame of mind when he followed his orders, but I hardly think that an soldier in Vietnam and a civilian who premeditated the murder and execution of several hundred innocent people are to be compared. Apples and oranges in my book.
