So why shouldn't the government decide salaries? To a great extent the
government does decides wage rates simply on the basis of being the
largest employer in the US. Because of that in many professions in
effect the government sets the baseline salary. Moreover since the
government does set the minimum wage,. that is another arbiter of
wages. Additionally the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes wage
rates for many professions. Again that has the effect of setting
wages.

Given the history of private industry screwing over workers I'd rather
trust the government in setting wage standards than private industry.
