But I wouldn't say that your price compaired with others on eLance or oDesk
is the major factor depending on the project that comes up. you could find
someone somewhat local that posts a project on there and you would get some
bonus points just because you are local. You could start bidding for jobs
that you estamate to be 5 to 10 hour projects and see if you get any
nibbles.

That aside, I'd be looking for a new employeer right now. Yes, you can do
things on your own, yes I'm doing this now but I found a solid client
sending me 20 to 40 hours of work a week. OR I should say, they found me
over a year ago on CF-Jobs when I posted my resume and asked if I was
interested in sub-contracting.

There are other aspects to consider when going at it alone. I personaly have
a slew of graphic design friends who help me out from time to time which is
a bonus but without that I'd be screwed. Plus there are all the other
aspects of running your own business. advertising, setting aside money for
taxes, talking with prospective clients, hosting fees etc. they all add up.

I won't try to push you away from this too much, but consider your existing
contacts around your area. Who could you count on to bring you design work?
Are you currently doing freelance from 10 to 20 hours a week? Could you
afford to live without pay for a month or longer depending on how things pan
out.

There is a lot at stake. I'm single, no serious bills so it works out, but
that being said, I'm not making a killing at it but it's still rewarding and
I like working from home.

And props on the scottish name there Mr McDougal ;-)

Good luck James
